KI-INSPIRE | Application of AI for radiation protection
Artificial intelligence is a promising field of study that is changing many facets of society. The medical field is not an exception, and we can see the trace of this technology in this field from diagnosis to treatment. One of the promises of the use of this technology in healthcare, which has drawn the interest of researchers, is in the imaging domain. Taping into the capability of this exciting technology, researchers now can improve the quality of medical images. In line with this trend and advances in the medical imaging field, the KI-INSPIRE project is aiming at improving the quality of interventional medical images and helping clinicians in their decision. The direct impact of this project will be on the radiation protection of patients who undergo surgical procedures under the guidance of a medical scanner. The technology developed in this project will allow getting “low-dose” noisy images then removing the noise from the image, ending up with an image with acceptable quality. This project is a national project between three partners of Otto von Guericke, Lübeck university, and the German cancer research center aim to develop AI algorithm in interventional computed tomography, angiography and nuclear medicine with both diagnostic and therapeutic purpose.
There are several topics and tasks that can be defined in this project. Some of them are as follow:
- Developing AI algorithms for use on medical images – as there’re several potential topics in this line, this topic is left very broadly for now (e.g. algorithms to improve the image quality of the noisy images which is the result of reducing dose in the medical image acquisition)
- Design a software tool to create slices of medical images to test AI models
- Creating a digital medical phantom for imaging scanners in the simulation environment
- Developing AI methods for reaching high accuracy of tissue classification during microwave ablation
- Testing and validation of the developed AI-based algorithms of reconstruction and artefact reduction methods
